Father, son killed in pickup truck crash

By Courtney Anderson Herald Staff Writer

GREENE, WEST SALEM TOWNSHIPS — A father and son were killed Friday morning when their pickup crashed on state Route 58 near the West Salem-Greene township line, officials said.

Stephan Zawistowski, 82, of 157 W. Main St., Greenville, was driving and lost control of the wheel at 10:45 a.m., state police said.

Zawistowski and his son, Theodore Zawistowski, 38, of 89 Fredonia Road, Hempfield Township, were pronounced dead at the scene at 11:35 a.m. by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Cris Loutzenhiser.

Police said the pickup was traveling west, went into a ditch and then struck several trees.

Neither man was wearing a seatbelt. Both were in the passenger compartment when police and rescue workers arrived.

The elder Zawistowski died of chest trauma and his son’s cause of death was head trauma, Loutzenhiser said. No autopsy is planned.

Eric Bailey Moved

Hi everybody,

Well, I finally did it. I made the move to Greensburg, PA. I was offered and took the job with the PA State Police as a DNA Analyst. Although I have achieved what I always wanted to do, it's not all downhill, yet. I still have extensive training to complete which might take me like a year or two to complete before I'm allowed to run my own cases. It's a lot like returning to school with required reading and question sets to complete and comprehensive tests along the way, not to mention, the mock trials. I at least completed what I set out to do since I graduated high school.
I would have liked to have said that the move went off without a hitch, but that is not the case. We didn't find out how bad it was until we arrived the day that we were moving in to find that the townhome was not ready. We actually had to stay at a hotel for a night after moving in because we had no toilets installed. So the place is a work in progress. Our landlord is at least trying to get everything fixed, so I won't have to sue him. Today, they managed to fix a few things.
Jared, my son, is a mix of happy that he has a new house with a backyard, but is completely bored out of his mind, and is lashing out and completely annoying the heck out of us. We are still trying to find things for him to do around the area to entertain him, but the area is nothing like Harrisburg. There is a lack of decent playgrounds that a toddler can handle. We have been frequenting the local Burger King which has a nice playland that Jared really enjoys, and we have been to Chuck E. Cheese twice in as many weeks.
I would like to thank those that came to my aid and help me pack or unpack. Especially, since I really torqued my shoulder and over exerted myself. I can now rest, at least, until I find a house to buy. Jayson and Cess I owe you guys one.
I would like to further say, if I haven't told any of you already, that we are expecting our second child. It will be another boy. The question now is do we name him Bryce (Bryson) or Tyler?

Sasquatch Transplant Update

.
Brothers,

Here is the latest on me, hope I don't bore you to tears.
.
On July 5th, after many attempts to reach me, my transplant co-ordinator finally got word to me that they had a potential donor and I needed to get my ass to Pittsburgh ASAP. My best friend rode down with me so he could drive my vehicle home if the organs were a match. They were, and they were viable. So at 11pm that night I went into surgery for a kidney and pancreas transplant. The surgery ended at 6am July 6th. When I woke up later that day I had tubes coming out of all but one orifice, both arms and my neck, yay. This was Sunday.
.
On Monday I felt pretty good, all things considered, but I discovered they weren't giving me my prescribed heart medicine. No big deal right? They know what they are doing, they have the alphabet soup after their names, and anyway I felt good. Not so fast Guido. On Tuesday, still sans my heart/blood pressure meds, I developed angina, which is a prelude to a heart attack unless proper meds are administered. Well, they dragged their feet in giving me the proper meds, and the angina worsened to the point that I had chest pain. Mind you, I hadn't had any chest pain in 18 months. I was pissed! Especially when I told them what meds I was supposed to be on, and they didn't believe me. Even though they had a list of my meds in their grubby little hands and they had all of my meds in their original containers spelling out the proper dosage! So they treated the symptom but not the cause, and less than one hour later the pain came back. Finally my cardiologist showed up and set them straight. Thank God! Now they think I have new heart problems. Not! Just the old ones, but they don't care. After about 4 days, they get their collective heads out of their asses and I was back on track to getting the fuck out of ICU.
.

Fast forward to the following Tuesday, July 15th, I think. They put me on a double strength antibiotic to treat a possible infection that I might have gotten from my donor. This was the day I was going to be discharged to an outpatient setting. 6 pm I leave to go to my friends house for about 2 weeks, then it will be home! Oops, the antibiotic they gave me reacts with another medicine I was on to thin my blood. Consequently, all night I was shitting blood, and when I went in the next morning my blood pressure was life threateningly low. ( 80/45) Guess what? They readmitted me to ICU.
.
They still didn't know about the adverse reaction of the drugs! Thank God my cardiologist came in on Wednesday and freaked when he found out what they had me on. He wrote an order to stop the antibiotic until my clotting level returned to normal. They ignored the order. I didn't. When the surgeon and fellows came in to find out why I was refusing the med, I informed them what my cardiologist told me, and that I trusted him, implying that I didn't trust them. Finally, on Saturday, things normalized and I restarted the antibiotic. On Tuesday, the 22nd, they discharged me and gave me a day off so I could go home for a night.
.

I came back to the 'burgh Wednesday night for 4 more days of daily outpatient treatment. They gave me a day off, and then on Tuesday, the 29th, I started Clinic, which is outpatient checkups every other week, and I was free!
.

I go for bloodwork, in Erie, twice a week, and about a week after I was home they thought I might be rejecting my pancreas. The only way they can be sure is by doing a biopsy. It was done last Tuesday, the 12th of August, and I am happy to say that I am not rejecting!
.

I am doing pretty good, all things considered. I normally have back pain, due to the fact that I have no stomach muscles for another 4 and a half months ( It will take that long for them to heal from the surgery.) and my back is compensating for that. I have lost a ton of weight. I now weigh about 185lbs, about the same as I was as a freshman in high school. Don't know when or if I will be able to drink again. Oh well, maybe I'll shoot for the POTY award this year! LOL.
.
I'm still slowly building my endurance back up, but that will take some time. I have one more major hurdle to get over this Friday when they remove a stent from ureter, between my new kidney and my bladder. And there is only one way to do this, through my pecker with a scope and dragging it back out the same way. OUCH! Supposedly it doesn't hurt. Yah right! The next 24 hours, every time I take a piss, it will feel like I'm pissing acid. Not looking forward to that.
.

That is all for now. Hopefully I will see all of the actives at the 1st SKN party of the year and the meeting on Friday, August 22.
.

Thank you all for your concern, phone calls and letters, it really made a difference and reinforced why we have the best brotherhood of all!
.

Fraternally yours,
.

Alumni Update - Gregg Davis

Its been quite a while since I've written an update and a hell of a lot has changed in the last year or so. So much so, I'm not sure exactly where to start. Last September, I married my girlfriend of 3 years, Jaclyn Cooper. We did a small Vegas wedding at the Shalimar Wedding Chapel on the strip (outdoor package #3). The original plan had been to just elope and get married at a drive through in a convertible, but - for the sake of our mothers - we had a small wedding with direct family and a friend or two. Sean Spudich (Bro Meat) was my best man. After the wedding we sent everyone home and we did some exploring in the southwest, eventually ending up in Colorado, coincidentally for another wedding of a friend of my wife's. We both really love the open spaces in Colorado (my wife's "native") as compared to suburban Philadelphia, but we left Colorado thinking that there was nothing for me to do in the state career-wise, as most biotech/pharmaceutical R&D is located on either the east or west coasts. Turns out we were wrong...

During this time I had been becoming increasingly dissatisfied with my job at GlaxoSmithKline (that's a subject for a book). I had held out until I finished my master's degree in Pharmacology in November (GSK was paying), then started looking. My area of drug discovery expertise is pretty specific to inflammation-/immuno-pharmacology, so I started searching for openings in other big pharma and biotech companies. I found what I was looking for at a company called Array BioPharma, which was coincidentally located in Boulder, Colorado. Array is a large biotech/small pharma company which focuses on drugs for treatment of cancer and inflammation. The interview went well and they offered me a job, I accepted, and relocated all between February and May of 2008. We moved out here in the middle of May, sold our condo after 2 days on the market, found a house in a nearby town called Longmont and settled by mid-June. The move went smoothly, except my fraternity paddle was temporarily lost in Erie.... Colorado. The bulk of our stuff had been in storage while we were in temporary housing and it was misplaced by the movers, then found by the office workers, who loved it and hung it up in the front office! That's good, because the thought of it lying on some dusty floors actually gave me nightmares of potential "encouragement" by my pledge master for loosing my paddle. Anyway, since then Jackie and I have been pretty busy getting the house together, and I've been getting settled into the new job. Besides that, lots of hiking.

So that's about it. Seems like a lot for 11 months. I'll be back to PA for PSU's glorious victory over those damn Wolverines in October, and for some low-altitude drinking. My contact information and address are below to update the web site. And if anyone's out this way for skiing, they'll need to stop by for a beer or a place to stay (we have plenty of room, although we're probably about at least an hour's drive to the nearest ski slope).

Howdy all,

I'd like to announce the birth of our son, Jean-Luc. He was born on July 9th (his due date to be exact), weighed 6 lbs., 11 oz and looks pretty darn cute. Colley did well during the entire labor and delivery and I had the privilege of delivering him myself.

We are very blessed and give thanks to God that Jean-Luc had a healthy trip the entire 40 weeks.

Stephen Hornyak Gets Married

I recently got married on April 26th. I meant to write earlier but all I had time for was a picture. Going along with what Jeb Murphy said, “SKN has been a wonderful part of my life”. I know that people are wondering why I am starting by writing about SKN and not my wedding. Well, here is a little insight into what I have taken from this organization. Thanks to Sigma Kappa Nu, I met Colleen, my now wife, at a mixer with the Theta Phi Alpha sorority back in the Fall of 2002 while I was pledging. As SKN was changing with the moving from house to house she was there along for the ride with me. She helped me when I was president and trying to find a new location in the Winter of 2005. A few months after I found the residence that the fraternity is currently in, Colleen moved in with me since I was the only one living there. I needed help with the rent and it just worked for us. Shortly after that we got additional roommates and the fraternity started to grow again. Colleen understood how important the fraternity was to me and she would even temporarily relocate herself during the two “Most Wonderful Times of the Year.”

We graduated in 2006. We then moved to Florida where I worked for the slave driving Bauers’ (thanks again for the opportunity). Upon our first visit back to Erie for the fraternity’s alumni annual Casino weekend, I proposed at the site of the original Skin House. We left Florida and moved to Pittsburgh and started planning our wedding in Erie. During the planning we visited the fraternity house almost every other weekend and seeing two new pledge classes get inducted gave us both that nostalgic feeling of being around something unique.

On the wedding day, I was looking down the row of my groomsmen and almost everyone was a brother. Also, a good number of the guests were brothers from all different time periods, not just from when I was in school. Since the fraternity was such a huge part of both of our lives lead me to lavaliere Colleen as part of my gift to her. And, being that I have been so close with the actives in the years after my graduation I swallowed my pride and took their punishment.

I currently have been involved in planning the reunion and trying to find a permanent residence for the actives. I hope to see all of you this summer on July 25th when we can have a few drinks and talk about how it was, is, and will be.

Cheatle Update

My wife Hannah and I have been very busy over the last
couple of years. In June 2006, we traveled to Austria
and Italy, where we got engaged in the Austrian Alps.
A year later, we had a small wedding ceremony with
just our immediate family in the Grand Tetons in
Wyoming. We had a very lovely wedding surrounded by
the mountains.

September last year we found out that
Hannah was pregnant. We decided to wait until the
birth to find out if it was a boy or girl. Last
Saturday we found out that it was a healthy baby boy,
Braden Allen Cheatle!!

We also purchased a home in St. Marys in May of last
year and have been doing some small remodeling
projects around the house. I am currently working at
Osram Sylvania in St. Marys as a Process Engineer. I
hope to keep in touch with everyone in the fraternity
a little more in the future.

25 Years of SKN. Can I Start the Reminiscing?

Jeb(’83) & Kathy Murphy in Sydney, Australia last June.

Who would have thought SKN would have lasted 25 years? We didn’t give it a thought when picking those three Greek letters out of a calculus book. We were simply making a statement. We were just doing what felt right.

Thinking back on the founding SKN brothers I realize how beautiful the combination of people and personalities were in that original group. Also, the fact that we were freshman was critical. That first year of college is so magical. Freshman are so eager to experience college life that their enthusiasm for it is the magic ingredient.

We were a very enthusiastic bunch of freshman.

The fact that we were at Behrend instead of Main campus was important. I doubt there are many new, organically created, social fraternities starting up on Main campus – there are fifty to chose from and five looking to get reinstated every year. Behrend was ripe for fresh ideas from freshmen.

The crew was John Fronco (Tron), Mike Fievet (Feev), Dan Coate (Dan-O), Eric Spielvogel, and, later a few others and little sisters – and of course, Doc. I’m not skipping people from lack of respect. The point I want to make can be made with these handful of founding fathers. The point is every single person that ever joined SKN has been vital. I say this now, but for nearly 25 years I’ve had unresolved feelings about my relation with SKN and my own contribution.

SKN has been a wonderful part of my life – everything about it. I love putting “Founded Sigma Kappa Nu Fraternity” at the bottom of my resume. It strokes my ego. However, in the first decade I used to feel slightly slighted in not getting more recognition as a Founder. It didn’t bother me too much, though. I left for Main the following fall - only a few months after breathing life into this thing. I didn’t do any of the hard labor. I was an absentee father. I’m OK with that now.

My contribution lasted one inspired week. Tron, Dan-O, Feev, Eric and I had planned another major theme party at the house that “Mel” rented from the infamous crotchety old landlord known as “Skinhead”. After a pile of $2 tickets had been sold (thanks to our party throwing reputation) and the place had been decorated, Skinhead came over and shut us down threatening to call the cops. The party was cancelled, we were pissed.

SKN was born.

The next morning was like the scene from Animal House when the Delta’s were kicked out of Faber College. As we took down our party decorations, I spouted some inspired jibberish about how “they” can’t do this to us and we need to start a fraternity. The “Man” wasn’t gonna keep us down. Tron, Feev, and Dan-O were in agreement. We didn’t hold up our swords and say, “All for one and …” It was more subtle than that. It could have died right then, as most ideas do.

A day or two later at the library, I was studying with Tron and Dan-O. Feev was probably there, but I’m sure he wasn’t studying. (Eric never studied, but I think he dated the librarian once.) I was looking at the back cover of our calculus book at the Greek alphabet and spouting off letter combinations. Very quickly we zeroed in on SKN, “skin” - in honor of the landlord with the Marine buzzcut. I offered up the colors blue and green and that was it. In less than a week all of my major contributions were done.

The leadership had to come from somewhere else. (Eric and I were both going to Main next fall) This wasn’t coincidence, it was divine intervention. Tron possessed the crucial skills to lead as President – it was meant to be. Feev and Dan-O rounded out the core cabinet and, with Doc signed on as advisor, they built the foundation of SKN.

Sophomore year Eric and I enjoyed offering a crash pad to SKN little sisters who always made weekends more fun. Tron, Feev, and Dan-O never made it down, though. They were busy with building SKN and initiating pledges (I think Bobby Capwell was part of that pledge class – another great leader). We were thrilled hearing about the progress back at Behrend. It was amazing how fast Tron and the gang grew SKN and bought the first house.

Funny, I don’t think any of the founding fathers would have joined a fraternity had we not started SKN. That said, I think a new Fraternity starts with every pledge class. Each pledge class is a brand new nucleus that gives birth to a new SKN. It’s a beautiful thing.

The long view of SKN has helped me understand myself. We all have a gift and roles to play. All the gifts are significant – they just look very different. I am still much better at inspiring people to do great things than seeing through the details of an enterprise. I’ve learned that my gift is enough to provide me joy without needing to be all things or attached to every ship I launch.

Your personal contribution to Sigma Kappa Nu may seem either monumental or insignificant. At times SKN is a power house on a roll and at other times it has barely limped along. At each turn, a brother’s contribution comes at the right time to fill the right need to keep the dream alive. It’s been a beautiful thing to watch unfold for 25 years.

To the brothers who have done the heavy lifting over the years, thank you. To the brothers who feel they only did a little, thank you. Your contribution was necessary and came at critical moments. Eric, my roommate and best PSU friend, did all his heavy lifting as SKN alumni – so you never know when it’s your turn to shine. And, finally, to Doc…

I know the SKN family holds a very dear spot in the life of Doc Leavers, and vice versa. Doc is the thread that all 300+ brothers and little sisters share over the 25 year span. He’s been SKN since before many were even born! He’s our JoePa! Words fail any true expression of gratitude for Doc’s contribution to SKN. Thank you, Doc.

Maybe the thing that amazes me most is how an idea can become an institution. And, how this institution is not a building with ivy on it, but a fragile living organism, that lives and breathes through its people.

Each SKN email or blog post just blows my mind that this thing is still going. You can’t imagine…

Thank you all.

25 Years of Sigma Kappa Nu

Dear Brothers of Sigma Kappa Nu,

Greetings! We hope this letter finds
you in good health. After a long break for
spring break and Easter weekend, the actives are
ready for a busy month. The spring has always
brought a large group of alumni to the Erie
area. As we celebrate another year of
fraternity, we hope for nothing different.

In efforts to “pregame” for the
anniversary month, SKN will be holding our annual
formal dinner and dance. For our second year, we
will be holding this dinner at the Presque Isle
Country Inn, Sterrettania Rd, Erie, PA. Brothers
will arrive by 4 PM. Dinner is served at 8:30
PM. Any brothers of Sigma Kappa Nu are welcome
to join us after dinner as we announce the
2008-2009 Officers. Let us know if you have an
interest in coming. It would be great to see
alumni at our formal. But this is only the beginning….

Sigma Kappa Nu will kick off the
month of April with our 25th Anniversary
Party. It starts on Friday, April 4th 2008 at
6:00 PM. The meal will include hamburgers,
hotdogs and other dinner dishes brought by the
actives. Drinks will be provided at dinner. We
will even have our own wait staff. All of this
is for just five dollars a person! Please do
whatever you can to make it to the dinner. We
can seat as many people as we need and we would love to see all of you.

After dinner the officers will be
talking to everyone about the present history and
the bright future of the fraternity. This will
be an opportune time to talk about great times
from the past. President Daniel Frankel will
give a toast to Sigma Kappa Nu, its founding
fathers, its alumni and its actives. We will
close with the largest chant in the fraternity's twenty five years.

Tradition continues the next day as
we hold our third annual DX v. SKN football
game. For the twenty-third year, Sigma Kappa Nu
is hosting a football game with another
fraternity. SKN has played Tau Kappa Epsilon and
Kappa Delta Rho in the past. SKN is 15-5-2
overall. We will play our anniversary game at
its new location in North East, PA. The field is
at 40 N Lake St, North East, Erie, Pennsylvania
16428. Kickoff is set for 12:30 PM. Reffing the
game will be Jimmy Z and Amor from the Pub. The
teams will arrive at 11:30 AM to set up the field
and warm up. We invite all alumni, friends and
families to this event as well! There will be
drinks and some food available at the game. Feel free to bring anything!

Post-Game festivities will be at the
Pub. Plenty of drinks will be had. We will
enjoy pub food and celebrate the quarter century
the best way we know. Our weekly Saturday party
will start at 8:00 PM that night. Brothers are
encouraged to come back to the SKN Compound to
celebrate for the rest of the evening.

On April 23, 2008 we will hold our
weekly meeting on this Wednesday. We invite any
brother willing and able to make the trip to Erie
on the day of our 25th anniversary. This will be
a great way to formally celebrate. That evening
SKNs will be having an open party. The brothers
will be bringing food and alcohol for all.

The wedding of Stephen Hornyak to
Colleen Russman will be held in Erie on April
26th. The ceremony is going to be held at Faith
Lutheran Church. Steve-o invites all of you up
to Erie to hang out in the days before the
wedding. There will be lots to do as Erie moves
into its warmer season. State Street always has
lots of specials Wednesday through Friday.

If you have any questions about the
weekend please get a hold of Glenn or Dan at any
time. We are more than willing to help you find
a place to stay or to just give you directions to
our new place! The actives look forward to
seeing you all these coming weekends. Travel safely and take care.

Odds & Ends

I have a bunch of little stuff that by themselves is not enough for a full blog...

Today I heard from Robb Brown (Fall 1985) . He is still in Clearfield selling cars. He says the last update of his info in the database was 1990.... 18 years... Our pledges this coming fall will have been born in 1990... Wow, time flies.

I have not heard from John Nakahara (Fall 1992) in a while. He has had two children, a boy and a girl. His boy, named Ben, was born October 7, 2006. We have another Skin legacy named Ben, born on October 7.... Tracey Rabekoff's (Spring 1988) son, born in 2003.

I'm sure you know that this is the 25th year of SKN. We have two reunions, the first will be in Erie, and will coincide with the annual football game. This will be on the weekend of April 5th. The actives should be blogging about this soon. The second reunion is July 25-27 in State College. You can find out more about this reunion on this blog. Unfortunately, the Behrend 60th reunion is the same weekend in Erie.

Shon Flemming (Fall 1990) is now in Florida, in St Augustine. He build a house with a pool in the back and still has parties that last into the early morning hours. They have a guest suite and welcome guests that bring beer.

Tim Gilboy (Fall 1988) wrote: "A funny note about my the company I work for. The company was bought by Siemens a couple of years ago and folded into their environmental group. We just changed our name to Siemens Environmental Systems and Services. And we go by the acronym SESS."

Jeff Schenker (Fall 1988) is back out exploring the world. He is now traveling through southeast Asia. If you want to keep up with his travels, check out his travel log at
http://www.travelpod.com/members/jeffsadventures

Can you imagine a SKN brother in the beer industry? Tom Micsky (Spring 1988) writes: "Laurie and I have jumped around quite a bit over the past few years, but have been more stable recently. In November of 2004 we had a chance to come back to Pittsburgh when I changed companies from Quaker Oats/PepsiCo to H. J. Heinz. I worked in the corporate sales planning office for nearly 3 years before an opportunity with Miller Brewing Company came up and I left Heinz this past July. I am now managing a sales team from my home office in the north Pittsburgh suburbs. It was nice not having to move to advance the career. The 3 years we have spent back home have now been the longest we have lived anywhere since we got married back in 1991. Hopefully we can stick around here a while and get my oldest daughter through high school (currently a freshman)."

I think that is enough for now. If you have an update, drop me a quick note.

Christmas photo with Louise (Keane) Teodosio (Fall 1983), daughter Emma (4 1/2) and husband Gary.

Sharon (Hines) Nolan

Christmas picture from Sharon (Hines) Nolan, Little Sister (Spring 1983). She writes:
My husband, Pat, and my kids Brendan (7) and Aimee (5) live in Colorado Springs, CO since 1994. I’ve been working at Verizon (formerly MCI and WorldCom) for 14 years as a software development manager. We love to ski during the winter and camp/boat in the summer. If anyone is out this way, give us a shout.

Geno

I heard from another long lost brother. Gene Edwards (Fall 1985) is now living in the Carolinas (like all the cool kids).

It truly has been way too long. In a nutshell a lot has occurred since my time at Raymond_Karsan Associates. I received a Ph.D in counseling psychology from New Mexico State University in the Fall of 2006 and I currently work as a psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in their counseling center. I have been married for the last 6 years and have a 4 and a half month old baby girl named Jordyn Roth Edwards. She is the light of my life:)
