The next Sistine Chapel?

I recently spoke with Kate (Byars) Buogo, and found out that she is now a mama. Kate gave birth to a baby boy in late April. Michaelangelo Buogo Jr. came about a month early and was about 5.5 pounds. Mama and her baby boy are doing just fine now.

Tom Lippert Speaks at Memorial Day Celebration

I was watching the Erie news after memorial day and they had this Army Lt. Col. speaking to a large crowd in Meadville, Pa. south of Erie. I kept looking at him thinking "I know him". I watched the news later to get his name, and it turned out to be Tom Lippert, a SKN brother! He was being driven around in this expensive convertable, waving to the crowds. Having just returned from Iraq, he was quite the celebrity. If I had known, I would have driven down to talk to him. Here's a little info about him:

Alumni Update - Pat Armstrong

I have decided to bring back an old newsletter staple.... the alumni update. Please send me an email and let me know what you have been up to since graduating. Sending a picture gets extra credit!

First up, Pat Armstrong (Fall 1987)

Amy and I own (with a third partner) aj MOSS, inc., a bedding and furniture
store, which is located in North Conway, NH. We have a Main Street store, but we
do 99% of our business online (http://www.ajmoss.com/). Amy and I are
expecting our first kid (a boy) at the end of September.

Birthday Ideas

I did get some response and ideas for Sigma Kappa Nu's 25th birthday which is fast approaching in 2008. Dave Krauth and Sean Spudich both volunteered to be on a planning committee. Plus Tony Parker said he would help out if there was interest in planning something at Hershey Park.

Here are a few of the ideas tossed around so far:

* A reunion in Erie to co-incide with Behrend's 60th birthday which will be held late July/early August, 2008.

* The birthplace of SKN in Erie, but Erie has less choices for people that want to bring their families. Pittsburgh is a good choice because of the number of alumni there and options for things to do. The last reunion on the boat went over very well. Getting a picnic grove at an amusement park would be a good choice (although this may be a non-alcoholic choice). There are certainly other options such as St College, but the options available and fewer alumni that live there don't make these real contenders.

* Anything in State College, but not Arts Fest or a football weekend.

* Stone Valley - There was a lot to do -- hiking, volleyball, horseshoes, canoeing, visiting the wild life sanctuary, a close golf course, etc. The campfire at night when we would tell SKIN stories & cook stuff over the fire was great fun.
Plus those with families could rent cabins and be separated from the wilder young guys at night [they were across the lake], another huge plus. The boat trip, our last reunion, in Pittsburgh was fine but far too short. Several hours so there was too little time to talk to each other.

* A family friendly blow-out at Hershey Park. Couple the park outting with a rental of a ball room or the Cubs Den at the Hershey Lodge for the evening.

* Wherever it is, plan an entire weekend of events, instead of one single party.

Any other ideas? Once we get several possible choices, we can create a poll for the web site, and hand it over to the committee to get it done. We will probably need more volunteers, but I'm sure Spudich and Krauth can recruit more people when the time comes.

Last but not least... Doc has volunteered his slides and videos. He has all 25 years of Sigma Kappa Nu documented!

25 Years

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Sigma Kappa Nu. A few people have already asked if there is going to be anything planned, and most would probably agree that something should be planned. The question is who is going to plan it, and what are we going to do.

Our alumni board has been defunct for over a year, and there is no interest in getting it going again. I propose that we get a committee together whose only purpose is planning a blowout party (family friendly, of course) for the big 25.

If you are interested, or have ideas, please let me know, or leave a message on this blog. Now is the time to start planning.

In Memoriam *RIP JB Scott, Fall 2001*

One of our fraternity brothers was killed in an accident on Saturday, May 5th. This makes two deceased brothers out of 360 in nearly 25 years. An amazingly low mortality rate. The details of the accident, from the Erie Times News are followed by the obituary from the St. Marys Daily Press.

St. Mary's man killed in rollover

RIDGWAY A one-vehicle crash Saturday night left a St. Marys man dead.

James Robert Scott, 25, died after he was partially ejected from the truck he was riding in when it rolled over, according to state police at Ridgway. The crash took place on Saturday at 9:45 p.m. on Ketner Road in Jones Township, Elk County, police said. The 2001 Ford F-250 was westbound on Ketner when the driver, Christopher Aaron Krieg, 23, of St. Marys, lost control of the truck, according to police. The vehicle went off the road and into a ditch along the north berm before traveling back across the road and hitting a group of large stones, which caused it to roll, police said.

James R. "JB" Scott

James R. "JB" Scott, 25, of 1192 E. Eschbach Road, St. Marys, died Saturday evening as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Jones Township. He was born April 20, 1982, in St. Marys, son of David J. and Mary Jo Scott of St. Marys, who survive.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, class of 2000. In 2004, he graduated from Penn State Behrend with a degree in plastics engineering.

He was employed by SGL Corp. in St. Marys.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the CMF, and the St. Marys Sportsmen's.
He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Jacquelyn Scott of St. Marys and Laura Scott at home, and his girlfriend Julie Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Loretta Skok, and by his paternal grandparents, Gail and Jean Scott.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m., with Rev. Eric Vogt OSB as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
